Fandom Snowflake Day 5 (Help!)

buffy - Giles librarian
Stretch yourself a little and try something new. Go play in a new fandom or with a new pairing. Try working in a new medium. Or consume different fanworks. Give that new fandom a go. Listen to a podfic or watch some vids if you haven’t before. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it.

And now I'm kind of stumped, because I do try out most fanworks, and often new fandoms (and there's been Yuletide lately, which I'm still poking around in and which is fab for that sort of thing) and I'm not averse to trying any pairings I think look at all interesting/fun. The only thing I don't do is listen to podfics, but there's a reason for that.*

So, help me out, if you will -

Please rec me something in a fandom I don't know that's non-spoilery. (Non-spoilery is so hard to be sure of when you're poking around looking for stuff yourself.) A fanvid would be perfect, or a very short and accessible fic would also be great. I'll either make another post or edit this one to review said recs a little. (Hopefully positively, but can't be guaranteed in advance!)

Oh, and if it's fic, I'm no good with explicit pr0n, I'm really not.

Thanks in advance! :-)

*Basically, I think podfics and podficcing are marvellous and there should be much more - I spent enough time in libraries having to think about ways to get things in as many different formats not to appreciate the importance of that. However I don't do audio books; I just can't and therefore not podfics either. Full cast audio plays are fine, but I just... can't listen to audio books, even when I can see there's been a temptingly perfect match-up of reader and book. Maybe one day. And I also have major embarrassment squick at the idea of having to listen to my recorded voice. *shudder*

Do you know Lackadaisy Cats?

http://archiveofourown.org/works/599918
“We’ve got to stop meeting like this,” says Dom, sliding into the booth across from him. This is a joke; Zib’s never laid eyes on him outside the big house. It occurs to him that maybe the reverse isn’t true - alto sax is the sort of girl that demands attention, and Lackadaisy’s bright for a cellar but dim for a dance hall. You don’t see much from the stage."

I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THOSE EVEN ARE. So, perfect, thanks.

Reccing for a fandom you don't know would be easier if I knew which fandoms you don't know...

Um. Have you ever dabbled in the Firefly fandom? 'Cause if not, there's a cute fic here you could try: http://firefly.populli.org/archive/11/bteam.shtml

 Yes, I thought that, but then listing what i don't know would be impossible, wouldn't it? I thought I'd trust to my reasonably comprehensive interests and tags and the ingenuity of my flist. And it seems to have worked.

And, no I only know Firefly by crossovers and osmosis. Oh, and Serenity. But the person who told me that would be okay without watching Firefly first, though v well meant, was not as reliable as you wonderful people. So will read the fic, shortly. *bounce*

Ohhhhh, you gotta watch Firefly! One of my all-time favourite shows, albeit short-lived.

I had an idea you wouldn't know the fandom based on your tags, so that worked!

There are things not mentioned in your profile or tags that I think you'd enjoy if you don't already know them. Have you seen "Babylon 5" or "Robin Of Sherwood"? I'd love to recommend "VR.5". but thirteen episodes, screened once twenty years ago, makes for a very limited fandom, most of which disappeared with Geocities. Or how about "Quantum Leap" or "Joking Apart"?

Thank you. I am intrigued by several of those, but I'm after specific fanworks - for today. (I'll investigate VR5 now. Very obscure/no fandom is just about my TV watching life lately, so why not?)

I loved VR.5. If it had succeeded, Anthony Head probably wouldn't have been in Buffy, so I guess I can give in and accept what happened. It was such a promising series, though! It's all up on YouTube, but I can't speak for the quality. There's never been a DVD release, and downloads are pretty much non-existent after all this time. Fan copies are beginning to look a little patchy by now.

If you're fond of obscure television, one thing I would seriously recommend is Wolf Lake. A superb fantasy series that debuted on American TV in September 2001, and was consequently watched by nobody. Died a death after half a dozen episodes, but I've rarely seen better world-building. It has about six fans in total. A couple more if you include the cast! That's up on YouTube too.

I'm familiar with Farscape and Stargate, and Buffy & Angel; do you know these ones at all? A shameless self-pimp: I wrote a completely non-spoilery, short Stargate story called Folsom Prison Blues a jillion years ago that people tend to like. It's a humor story and tries to capture the team dynamic.

Thank you! I only know Stargate from crossovers and seeing bits of episodes when my friend watched it, so that'll do nicely. (I've started watching Farscape now and yes, I know Angel & Buffy v well, I just tend not to get into the fandom side of things with them.)

I can second-rec eve11's SG1 story - it's one of my fandoms (it was, as I said on my rec post, one of her stories that tipped me firmly into it).

Tooting my own trumpet with a James Bond fic. All you need to know is that Judi Dench plays M and Daniel Craig plays Bond - and I ship 'em. (Which you already knew anyway if you've been paying even the tiniest bit of attention the past 2 months!)

This Shall Be My Dancing Day (1305 words) by Persiflage
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: James Bond (Movies), James Bond (Craig movies)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: James Bond/M
Characters: James Bond, Female M (James Bond), Original Characters
Series: Part 14 of Bondkink Fics
Summary:

Bond and M are at a masquerade ball...

It's vaguely suggestive but that's all (and less so than an actual Bond movie!).

I second RoS. Rusty_armour who I read a million years ago has put their fics on AO3 and they are mostly humour and the serious ones aren't p0rn as I recall:

Thanks! I'll take the vids for the moment, as I've a handful of other recs here to play with, but that's great. :-)

I'll note the links for future, though - this is turning out to be rather fun.
