Two things

Northanger reading
1. A question for any other Chalet Schools fans (that probably I should post to freudesheim, I know, but anyway): I've just finished The Chalet School Does It Again and there's a really odd bit at the end I've noticed before, but I usually forget where it came before I ever think to ask.

Basically, during the Welson play (the Willow Pattern one), in the audience, Madge Russell hears a stranger commenting on it, as does Miss Wilson, who turns to look and thinks the speaker is slightly familiar. And... nothing. So, either this is an odd little Elinorism, or else the conclusion (who the speaker actually is) has been edited out of the revised pbk edition. (My collection, barring one book only is entirely comprised of the Armada paperbacks.) Anyone round here have the hardback/GGB edition and can tell me? It's just a couple of pages from the end, in the middle of the Willow Pattern play. I'd be grateful, because it's definitely odd.

ETA: apparently it is a slight anomaly in the full-text version too. (My flist knows everything. ♥)

Talking of Elinorisms, wouldn't it be hilarious if CS was a really large fandom. We could have wars about what everyone's names really are. Is Matron really Gwyneth Lloyd, or Matron Gould? Is Mademoiselle Therese or Elise or Therese Elise and is she Le Pattre or La Pattre? Is Rosalie Browne the same person as Rosalie Way? Is Mr Barras Adrian or Miles? Verity-Ann or Verity-Anne? And etc. etc. Other fandoms would not know what to make of us. We'd never get past the spellings to have ship wars.

Or maybe this actually happens on the forum and I don't know because I don't ever look at it...

2. [community profile] gen_battle is now a thing. Of course, at the moment I have 500 prompts already (well, no, really I have about 200 *cough*) but I think that will be relevant to various people's interests?

Oh, and 3. I feel a bit less tired again now. :-)

Glad to hear you're feeling less tired - I wish I was!

Aw. I'm sorry! *hugs*

Still, I was at that point where I was so tired everything made me cry, so I'm glad that's over. I hope you have a a nice couple of days off, then. *hugs again*

I've been feeling like crying all week, too - combination of being too tired and in so much pain from the bloody cold weather (not helped by the boss refusing to heat the shop!)

I have some friends who are proper Chaletians (running fannish stuff from way back), so if you don't get an LJ answer I could ask them! I've only read the pbks of most of them, not nearly hardcore enough for this question!

I imagine hours of meta and wankery trying to explain away the names. Acres of typing. And one tiny heretical faction that just think it's bad filing and sloppy checking...

Aw, thanks. hhertzof came to my rescue though - apparently it's an anomaly in the full version, too. I have one hbk that I got as a present. One day, if I'm ever really rich or something, it'd be lovely to get more of them, because some of some quite signifcant cuts. On the other hand, I'm nostalgically attached to my pbks...

:-) I mean, I know that they are discussed and known as Elinorisms, but... the splendid potential for a really pedantic fandom war is amusing to hypothesize about. :-D

1. I don't do forums but on the girlsown mailinglist, I'm sure I've seen all these conversations at one point or another. Also, there are canonically several Matrons. I'm not sure why they're not bigger on LJ/DW or AO3. It's one of those fandoms where I always cheer when I get new tags to wrangle.

I did check my copy of Does It Again (GGB paperback, with the hardcover text) and it's never resolved in there either.

Thanks! That's obviously not the answer I was hoping for, but it is the answer, so that's great. Obviously an Elinorism, then. :-)

And, yes, indeed. The original Matey, though, is generally agreed to be Matron Lloyd, but there's a whole run of books where's it's specifically stated that Matron Gould is the real true Matey and Matron Lloyd her satellite. And one time Matron Rider gets that honour.

And I'm sure it does come up - it's discussed even in the Helen McClelland Armada behind-the-scenes book. But, still, the potential for fandom wars is quite something. Ha.

I knew you'd know the answer to this :)

That's a total EBDism, as others have said - there are dangling plot points like that in a number of books!

:-) So it seems! It's an odd one, though - I'm used to all the name changes and things, but that one is a mystery!

Thanks. It's only "less tired than before" but sometimes that's enough. :-)

Hope you had a nice time at redemption and are okay?

Less tired than before is definitely enough.

I am having a good time at Redemption - two lie downs a day seem to be keeping me going. Sitting down and concentrating for an hour is hard going - although today I've mostly gone to panels that don't require concentrating which has helped :) You should come to one in the future when you're well enough.

Aw, good. :-)

And, yes, that would be great - another thing for me to aim for!

I'm glad you're feeling a bit less tired. That is good news!

As for the books, I see you got your answer. EMBD does that a lot. She did it in the 2nd book (Chalet School and Jo) when they're spending Christmas with the Mensches, iirc. Jo exclaims over their new frocks, which are from Dick. Madge says these aren't his main gifts and Jo will see later what they are...then you never find out! I was disappointed on reading the uncut versions to find things like this are never resolved!

Thanks. :-)

Heh, yes, I think I noticed that too, but I'm not half as curious to know what they got for Christmas as I am to know who the mysterious woman is at the play! Drat that Elinor M Brent-Dyer!
