Obscure & British Commentfest 2016

Welcome to the Obscure & British comment fest IV! This is a comment fest for any small(ish) British fandom and open to all fanworks.

If you've ever loved any (non-large) British fandoms, find yourself too obscure for most fests, or you're busy wondering why there's still no Emma Peel in all this Avengers stuff, you're in the right place. Come on in and help yourself to a cup of tea and a crumpet. Also you should make prompts and fill them.

Rules & Guidelines
This commentfest works in the same way as most comment ficathons, although all kinds of fanworks are welcome. (Fanart, icons, fanmixes, vids, or whatever your creative mind can come up with or prompt for.) Just leave your prompt and/or browse through other people's prompts to see what you can fill.

1. Be polite - no bashing or shaming of anyone, or any prompts, characters, ships or fandoms! Thank you.

2. One prompt per post, please use format: Fandom(/Fandom), Character(s)/Pairing(s), prompt (i.e "Spooks, Tom/Ruth, apocalypse AU"). You may repost prompts from previous years (or even from elsewhere, as long as that's okay with the other fest/comm/whatever).

3. Post fills as replies (or links) to the comment containing the prompt. Please format the subject line as follows: Fandom - Character(s)/Pairing(s) - Ratings/Warnings (if included). There's a fills thread at the start of the post. Please also link your fill here, if you can. (I will also start up a masterlist post as soon as we have some fills.)

4. You may fill your own prompts if you wish, and multiple fills are more than welcome. (No prompt claiming needed.)

5. For crossovers any fandom is allowed as long as the first fandom qualifies. (If it's a cracky multi-fandom crossover prompt, that's fine, too, though try and make sure there are always equal or more eligible fandoms in proportion to those that are non-eligible.)

6. Any other questions - there's a questions thread at the start of the post if there's anything else you want to ask.

7. Prompt, fill, away!

Eligible Fandoms
Basically, any rare to smallish/medium British fandom, no matter how odd, old, obscure, non-existent, random or how shiny and new - anything that's not on the below list is fine. (Definitions of British are also fairly wide and hand-wavy - check on the questions thread if you're not sure.)

Non-eligible fandoms
ALL non-British fandoms are ineligible and the following fandoms are British but too large and therefore ineligible for this fest (although don't forget that you can prompt for any fandom as a crossover with an eligible fandom):

Chronicles of Narnia (all), Doctor Who (2005+), Downton Abbey, Harry Potter, The Hobbit (all), James Bond (Craig!Bond films), The Kingsman, Lord of the Rings (all), Merlin, The Musketeers (BBC), One Direction, Pride & Prejudice (all), Primeval, Robin Hood (BBC), Sherlock (BBC), Sherlock Holmes - Arthur Conan Doyle, The Silmarillion, Torchwood.

(RPF is welcome! Please use specific categories when prompting (e.g. history by century, and all actor/bandom RPF by individual series/film/band or whatever grouping seems most appropriate. In the spirit of the fest, please try and avoid RPF for non-eligible shows and super-popular actors like Tom Hiddleston or Benedict Cumberbatch.)

There's no closing date for prompts or fills - the fest will stay open until next year's post goes up. Once you've created a fill, you're welcome to crosspost it anywhere you like. (If you're posting to AO3, there's no collection for the fest, but there is an "Obscure & British Commentfest" tag you can use if you want.)

If you want to promote the fest, then thank you! Please do. You can find a selection of banners here, or feel free to make your own.

You can find last year's fest here. Also: O&B 2014 and O&B 2013. If you want to fill or repost a previous prompt, you may, although please also post to the fills thread on the current post.

ETA: Masterlist of Fills!

For those who don't have an LJ account, or prefer to remain anonymous, anon commenting is on!

The Champions - Craig/Sharron/Richard - Finding their way together.
“Are you all right, Richard?” Sharron felt strange asking the question while rubbing the lump on her own skull.

“I will be,” Richard managed, clutching his own head, knees drawn up to his chest. “It’s more unnerving than painful. I can feel the bang to your head bouncing around in mine.”

Craig looked from his old friend to his new colleague with unconcealed concern. “You’d think those Tibetans could have mentioned that the whole ‘enhanced abilities’ package came with side effects. You know, dry mouth, dizziness, shared concussions…”

“It’s only to be expected, I suppose,” Sharron murmured, leaning back against the wall. She didn’t feel up to standing yet, and the doctor in her was telling her in no uncertain terms that Craig’s diagnosis was correct. “If telepathy and other sensations go both ways, why not pain?”

“It doesn’t mean it’s not inconvenient,” Richard grumbled. His head was starting to feel better, but there was still a vague ache behind his eyes. He wondered how awful Sharron was feeling if he was only getting an echo of her pain. “We were both incapacitated when you were hit. If Craig hadn’t been here, we’d be in even more trouble.” He shot an almost accusatory look at his friend. “How come you weren’t affected? The connection runs three ways.”

Craig shrugged. “Don’t look at me. I skipped ESP at school. Macready’s the one with the letters behind her name.”

“Yes, but the science is…imprecise, to say the least,” Sharron sighed. “Bordering on non-existent. No one’s confirmed anything. We have the suspicious claims of mediums and magicians and not much else.” She unpinned her hair from her updo and let the long blonde tresses fall free. It made her feel a little better. “I need time to run more tests, and do research.”

Craig knelt beside her and put an arm around her shoulders, smiled reassuringly. “It’s not all on you, Macready. We’ve got to figure this one out together.” He looked at Richard. “We used to do mental exercises for flight training. We could adapt them, maybe learn to control what we want to send out to each other. Might work.”

Richard nodded. “That’s a good idea. We have to do something, or we’re not going to survive as a team. At this point, we’d be a liability to anyone else we worked with, unless we all took on desk jobs.”

“Well, we can’t do that. You should see Richard’s shorthand!” Craig quipped, and Sharron laughed in spite of her headache. “Come on, Macready. Let’s get you an ice pack, and then we can figure out what to do with our superpowers.”

“Superpowers,” Richard huffed, pulling himself to his feet. “Really, Craig. You read too many comic books growing up.”

“You laugh. People compare me to Captain America all the time.”

Sharron laughed again, and her head felt better.

Department S, Jason King/Stewart Sullivan/Annabelle Hurst, huddling for warmth cramps one's style

Department S-Jason King/Stewart Sullivan/Annabelle Hurst-Huddling for warmth cramps one's style.
“This really is intolerable,” Jason King complained, pulling the blanket tighter around his shoulders. Beside him, Annabelle Hurst was scribbling frantically in a notebook with shaking fingers. “It’s bad enough we have to sit so close to the fire—there’s soot on my trousers. Soot!—but for the pair of you to start borrowing items out of my wardrobe is an affront to both style and dignity.”

“We need the extra layers, Jason.” Stewart Sullivan, huddled on the other side of Annabelle, prodded at the dying embers of the fire with a poker, desperately trying to revive them. “As soon as she figures out which equations to feed her computer, we can find a way to shut down the machine that’s cut all the power in England in the dead of the coldest winter this country’s seen in years.”

“Well, it’s playing merry hell with my fashion sense,” Jason protested, holding out his arms for Stewart to see. “Look at my French cuffs! Look at them! All the starch in the world won’t put them right again.”

Stewart groaned and stood up. “We need something else to burn,” he declared, hoping the change of subject would stop Jason’s endless complaints. He eyed Jason’s bookshelves with interest. “Do you own anything written by anyone other than you?” he asked incredulously.

“The moment someone else writes something worthwhile, I’ll be the first in line at the shop,” Jason snapped, regarding Stewart suspiciously. “What are you doing?”

“Considering my options.”

“Good gracious, burning books now, are we?” Jason grumbled, cigarette trembling between blue lips. “How quickly we’ve reverted to the dark ages.”

“All we’ll have are dark ages if Annabelle can’t find a solution,” Stewart reminded, reaching for a handful of volumes.

“Not the first editions!” Jason exclaimed, trying to untangle himself from the blanket to leap to his feet. “What are you, a barbarian?”

“Do you have a better idea?” Stewart countered in exasperation. “We’re out of kindling and newspaper, and all the stores are sold out. We need fuel and we need it now. So unless you’re going to throw yourself on the fire—and I won’t stop you if you do—quit complaining!”

Jason huddled into the blanket, sulking like a small child. “Well, start with the foreign language editions, at least,” he muttered. “The author’s photo is atrocious.”

Stewart sighed and looked heavenward for strength, but dutifully pulled out a stack of non-English titles from the shelf.

“It may not come to that,” Annabelle cut in suddenly, voice stuttering alarmingly. “I think I have it! I have the equations for Auntie!”

“Then there’s not a moment to lose.” Jason sprang up, pulling Annabelle with him. “We can take my car.”

“How noble of you, Jason,” Stewart said flatly, tossing the books unceremoniously on the couch.

“Anything for the preservation of great literature,” Jason declared, wrapping the blanket a little more tightly around Annabelle’s shoulders. “Come along, my dear.”

Doctor of Philosophy

John Ambrose was not a man to take no for an answer. Therefore although he was, by now, too advanced in years to find travel easy, he would not allow that to stop him from going to the book fair to oversee his hapless publisher's attempts to bring his “The Channel Islands: From the Ice Age to the Modern Age” to a wider audience. This magnum opus had been in construction, in that book-lined den of his, for several years longer than he had anticipated.

“Just as I thought I'd got to the end of it, along comes material for an entire new section. If I'd known what was in store for us, I'd have rushed it into print before the occupation. Well, the least they can do now is help promote the thing.”

They being, of course, not the publishers, but the people responsible for the delay in publication: to wit, the Germans. But the Frankfurt Book Fair, newly reinstated, was the oldest and most famous in the world, and there, accordingly, John Ambrose was to go.

“Well, as your doctor, I can't advise it, but if you're determined, I can't stop you,” said Philip, and prepared to make his escape.

“Ah, that's where you come in!” said Ambrose. “I can't go on my own, d'you see? But you and Mrs. Martel have been to the area before. Don't you want to see Wiesbaden again?” and he smiled that impish smile of his.

“No, I do not,” began Philip. “I've got far too much to do here, and you know it.”

“And you need a break; and so does your wife, and so, may I add, does Mrs. Porteous. Wiesbaden is famous for its warm baths, I believe, and she hasn't been away since Peter... well, she hasn't been away for a long time. Do her the power of good.”

Protests about Clare were swept aside. She was doing well in her quiet seclusion at the nunnery, and Clive was back on the island now. And in fact, Philip did want to see Wiesbaden again; and in Frankfurt itself, an old acquaintance of his was teaching philosophy at the university.

So two months later Philip and his wife and two friends were en route to Wiesbaden, in a first class railway carriage. (He would say that for Ambrose, he didn't do things by halves.) The hotel was the one they had stayed in before the war, though their rooms were better; and the city itself, though full of American soldiers, was still recognisable to himself and his wife.

Olive and Helen were looking forward to having a lazy time to themselves, making the fullest use of the facilities of the spa. Therefore a couple of days later it was just Philip and Ambrose who boarded the train to Frankfurt. On emerging from the station just half an hour down the line, Ambrose disappeared with a casual wave into the old church where the fair was being held, there to plague his unfortunate publisher with suggestions and directions, and Philip made his way to a certain café in a tree-filled square not far from the university. There he settled down in the mild October sunshine, newspaper in hand and coffee-cup on the table in front of him; and exactly on time a tall, spare figure made its way between the trees, brushing now and then at a yellowing leaf that had fallen upon him and seemed reluctant to depart his person, and fetched up at Philip's table.

He was greyer than Philip remembered him, and unfamiliar in a suit rather than the uniform of the Wehrmacht, but his lean features were the same. As always, Philip felt hopelessly rumpled beside him. That had never mattered in the slightest.

He laid aside his newspaper and rose. “Herr Doktor.” He smiled, and held out his hand. Had they ever shaken hands before? He couldn't remember. “It's good to see you again.”

There was the slightest pause. “Thank-you, Dr. Martel. I confess I'm a little surprised that you should say so – though it's a pleasant surprise, I do assure you!”

He was more diffident than he had once been.
