Obscure & British Commentfest 2016

Welcome to the Obscure & British comment fest IV! This is a comment fest for any small(ish) British fandom and open to all fanworks.

If you've ever loved any (non-large) British fandoms, find yourself too obscure for most fests, or you're busy wondering why there's still no Emma Peel in all this Avengers stuff, you're in the right place. Come on in and help yourself to a cup of tea and a crumpet. Also you should make prompts and fill them.

Rules & Guidelines
This commentfest works in the same way as most comment ficathons, although all kinds of fanworks are welcome. (Fanart, icons, fanmixes, vids, or whatever your creative mind can come up with or prompt for.) Just leave your prompt and/or browse through other people's prompts to see what you can fill.

1. Be polite - no bashing or shaming of anyone, or any prompts, characters, ships or fandoms! Thank you.

2. One prompt per post, please use format: Fandom(/Fandom), Character(s)/Pairing(s), prompt (i.e "Spooks, Tom/Ruth, apocalypse AU"). You may repost prompts from previous years (or even from elsewhere, as long as that's okay with the other fest/comm/whatever).

3. Post fills as replies (or links) to the comment containing the prompt. Please format the subject line as follows: Fandom - Character(s)/Pairing(s) - Ratings/Warnings (if included). There's a fills thread at the start of the post. Please also link your fill here, if you can. (I will also start up a masterlist post as soon as we have some fills.)

4. You may fill your own prompts if you wish, and multiple fills are more than welcome. (No prompt claiming needed.)

5. For crossovers any fandom is allowed as long as the first fandom qualifies. (If it's a cracky multi-fandom crossover prompt, that's fine, too, though try and make sure there are always equal or more eligible fandoms in proportion to those that are non-eligible.)

6. Any other questions - there's a questions thread at the start of the post if there's anything else you want to ask.

7. Prompt, fill, away!

Eligible Fandoms
Basically, any rare to smallish/medium British fandom, no matter how odd, old, obscure, non-existent, random or how shiny and new - anything that's not on the below list is fine. (Definitions of British are also fairly wide and hand-wavy - check on the questions thread if you're not sure.)

Non-eligible fandoms
ALL non-British fandoms are ineligible and the following fandoms are British but too large and therefore ineligible for this fest (although don't forget that you can prompt for any fandom as a crossover with an eligible fandom):

Chronicles of Narnia (all), Doctor Who (2005+), Downton Abbey, Harry Potter, The Hobbit (all), James Bond (Craig!Bond films), The Kingsman, Lord of the Rings (all), Merlin, The Musketeers (BBC), One Direction, Pride & Prejudice (all), Primeval, Robin Hood (BBC), Sherlock (BBC), Sherlock Holmes - Arthur Conan Doyle, The Silmarillion, Torchwood.

(RPF is welcome! Please use specific categories when prompting (e.g. history by century, and all actor/bandom RPF by individual series/film/band or whatever grouping seems most appropriate. In the spirit of the fest, please try and avoid RPF for non-eligible shows and super-popular actors like Tom Hiddleston or Benedict Cumberbatch.)

There's no closing date for prompts or fills - the fest will stay open until next year's post goes up. Once you've created a fill, you're welcome to crosspost it anywhere you like. (If you're posting to AO3, there's no collection for the fest, but there is an "Obscure & British Commentfest" tag you can use if you want.)

If you want to promote the fest, then thank you! Please do. You can find a selection of banners here, or feel free to make your own.

You can find last year's fest here. Also: O&B 2014 and O&B 2013. If you want to fill or repost a previous prompt, you may, although please also post to the fills thread on the current post.

ETA: Masterlist of Fills!

For those who don't have an LJ account, or prefer to remain anonymous, anon commenting is on!

Fill: A Strange Understanding.
He's really not sure how he can define this, them. He likes definitions, to be able to point to a word or a phrase and know exactly what it is and what it means. When he thinks about the two of them as a unit (which he has been doing more and more) there are a couple of definitions he can use. The first one is collegues, the image of the Inspector and his sergeant, boss and (opinionated and grumpy) subordinate. The second word that can define their relationship is friends. Yet somehow it sounds wrong. Not enought time spent together in their off hours. Nights at the pub, dinner at home, and some shared hobby is not a noticable part of their partnership.

Partnership sounds oddly right.

There is trust, and there is (unvoiced) affection.

Such as the gentle look in Miles' light gray eyes when he tells him (yet again) that he will be by his side whatever happens. The firm grip of his hand on his arm when the sight of certain crime scenes get to him.

There is a form of understanding underlying all of this that he has never felt before.

He can read Miles better than any other person in his life. The rise on an eyebrow or the twitch at the corner of his mouth speaking volumes.

That look that says "I know, I understand"

Then there is those touches to the inside of the wrist. When he reach for Miles, or he reaches for him. He can't properly define those moments either. Other then that it speaks of need and reassurance. "You're still here" and "I need your support" When it comes to the job there is nobody else's support he wants and needs as much as Miles'. When it comes to his personal life it's beginning to turn into much of the same.

Miles knows. He does not mind that he knows. There is an understanding, and understanding is good. At least for the two of them who have never come to the point of voicing too much of their feelings.

Their feelings for each other.

There is a strange understanding.

And he gives into the need for a kiss.

(Hope you will get a proper fill as well, but I had to give this one a try)

Fill: Give their lives a glimmer of hope
„It’s only a phase,“ her mother had said, and Margaret was old enough to hold her tongue (but not her thoughts). She learnt over the years what to say and what not to (which alone had been a great relief to her family), yet she found herself more than often rather talking than thinking about far away places, foreign countries and strange customs.

Her sisters had thought that this passion would fade with time, that Margaret would find something else to put her interest in if they just gave her enough stories (including of course the most unpleasant the Colonel could think of), if Margaret were old enough to attend the dances, to have some suitors, more friends …

But the youngest Dashwood had enough time to cultivate her friendships and still dream of adventurous journeys to the end of the world. She wasn’t afraid of asking questions to anyone who was willing to answer (or not), and due to this curiousity many men were already withdrawing from the young girl. They had marveled at her beauty, but as soon as they’ve found her less dull than expected (than the other girls her age who were behaving more appropriate), they regarded Margaret with impersonal politeness and went their way.

“It’s a phase,” her mother had said again when her youngest still carried her atlas around, planning where she wanted to go first and how to travel there …

“Are you sure?” Elinor had frowned.

“It has to be … What else can I do but to hope?” Mrs. Dashwood had sighed and asked for another tea.

Sometimes Margaret felt bad for worrying her mother the way she did, but then she told herself that it was more important to be herself. She wanted to be as happy as her sisters, hoped for somebody who would love her for what she was with all her passions, and maybe even share her wanderlust.

Though her family didn’t like to hear it, Margaret’s best argument would be Marianne who had had troubles of her own finding a husband in the first place, losing herself in dreams of passionate love and almost missing out on the one that could really make her happy. (Almost.) But all Marianne had needed was time.

“And that’s exactly what it’s going to be like for me,” Margaret says and takes her mother’s hand. “We just have to wait. You’ll see, someone will come who’s just right for me.”

(And while she waits Margaret will dream of blue waters, dry and dusty heat, foreign animals and indian spices that fill the air …)

Her mother looks at her with eyes that say ‘What shall I do with you?’, but her lips give Margaret a kiss of unconditional love on her forehead, and that’s all the girl needs.

AN: Sorry for the kinda open ending, but I really couldn't decide whether I'd like Margaret to find someone or not ... both ideas had their appeal ^^'
So it's up to you to imagine an ending you would like :'D Sorry, hope you enjoyed it nevertheless (a little).

Neverwhere - Ingress
She'd survived. She didn't know where but she called it the cracks and decided there were rules to how it worked, even if she had to make them up herself. It took her an eternity to establish contact with the outside. In a space with no dimension of time everything happens now but takes forever and lasts eternally. She made a game of escaping, returning home. Her rules reached out and shaped neighbouring realities. The players searched the world for her, not understanding she was their ultimate goal. They named their game Ingress (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ingress_(video_game)), without knowing why... until they found her.

Humans, Niska, dreams

Humans - Niska - Dreams
Niska “sees” things, when she’s recharging. At first she thought they were some sort of malfunction, a short-circuit in her artificial retinas, the failure of her consciousness to shut down during the process. But the things she “saw”, they weren’t real, but not in the right way to be a misperception of the world around her.

She had heard David tell Leo about something called “dreams”, when she was very young, and the science behind them. Humans “dreamed” when they went to sleep, had adventures and saw things that made little sense in the waking world, but that felt completely real during the dream itself. David explained that the dreams were a jumble of things and feelings that the person had experienced or thought about recently, a way for humans to process all of the information that they had accumulated during the day. There were good dreams and strange dreams and bad dreams. The bad dreams were called “nightmares” After the car accident, Leo had lots of nightmares about being back in the car, under water, unable to swim to the surface.

Lately, Niska has come to the conclusion that she is having nightmares, too, just like a human. She isn’t sure if this burgeoning sign of humanity is better or worse than malfunctioning, but she knows that it what they are. She sees the faces of the men who have hurt her—David, the men at the brothel—and they threaten to hurt her again. These aren’t memories, though she has flashbacks of those, too, when she’s awake. Too many things are wrong—she’s not in the right place, she’s not wearing the right clothes, nobody has aged—but the feelings are the same. Fear. Anger. Shame. Helplessness.

She has other dreams, too. Not nightmares. Dreams. Happy ones where she’s free. Where there are no humans standing in her way, telling her what to do. Those are the ones she hangs onto, even when she’s awake. She always hears humans talking about how dreams inspire them, push them to do greater things. It’s one part of humanity, at least, that she can relate to.

Robin of Sherwood, Robin/Marion, star-gazing

Robin of Sherwood, Robin/Marion, star-gazing, all ages

A full moon lit Robin and Marion's way as they crossed a clearing in Sherwood Forest. Earlier, they had enjoyed the hospitality of the villagers of Wickham, who were celebrating the marriage of one of their own to a man from a neighbouring village. Marion had her arm through Robin’s and was remembering her marriage ceremony.

“The stars are spectacular on a clear night,” said Robin, breaking into her thoughts.

“Mmm,” agreed Marion and paused with him to gaze up at the sky. Her amenable disinterest finished when a shooting star flew across the sky. “Look.” She pointed.

“I wonder where they land.”

“Perhaps there’s a land full of fallen stars. Although, I’ve often seen them falling, I’ve never found any.”

“No?”

“When I was a child, I used to rush out to see if I could find a fallen star.”

“And you also went after the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow?”

“I left the gold for wolfsheads to find. Oh!”

Robin turned his face back to the night sky expecting to see another shooting star.

Marion gently pulled his chin down. “Not up there, in the trees.”

Robin frowned, puzzled.

“Over there.” She pointed with her free arm again. In the foliage was a row of three twinkling lights.

“There’s definitely something.”

“Let’s look.” Marion tugged at his arm.

“It’ll be the remains of an old charm left to scare unwelcome visitors off,” said Robin allowing himself to be towed over to a tree. Once there, Robin checked he had his dagger with him. “If there’s anything dangerous up there, a knife will be easier to wield in a tree than a sword.”

Marion nodded and notched an arrow to her bow. She stood guard as Robin climbed the tree. Shortly, she heard him emit a short laugh.

“What is it?” Marion put her bow away. She had to wait for her answer until Robin dropped to the ground in front of her.

Robin grinned.

“Well?” Marion wanted to know what the joke was.

“I’ve got it.”

Marion narrowed her eyes.

“Your childhood self wouldn’t look at me like that.” Robin reached inside his jerkin and drew out a necklace. It had three sapphires set in gold dangling from the links. “Behold a shooting star and her sisters.”

“How lovely.” Marion stretched out her hand to touch the gems. “How do you think they ended up in the branches?”

“A bird could have stolen it.”

“A feathered one or a careless robber?”

“The villagers won’t have any trouble paying taxes for a long time,” said Robin, inspecting the jewels closely.

“It’s a shame the only use we have for jewellery is to pay taxes, while Lords and Ladies can enjoy them for their beauty.”

“There’s no rush to pawn them straight away.” Robin put the necklace round her neck. “There, the Queen of May is transformed into the Mistress of the Moon.”

Marion laughed at Robin’s light-hearted talk.

“The gems, however, are no match for the wearer’s own allure,” said Robin, putting a hand on her cheek to kiss her.

This might not be the dinosaur you were thinking of...
"I don't have the accounts, they've been eaten by a dinosaur."

Lynda sighed. As excuses went it didn't even qualify as outrageous in comparison to others she'd heard. Even including the time when he claimed they'd been exterminated by Daleks. In order to loom over him, she stepped closer to his desk and leaned over it. His fixed smile didn't falter. "Colin, there are no dinosaurs in Norbridge. There haven't been dinosaurs anywhere on the planet for the last 65 million years."

"Except these." He held up a toy Tyrannosaurus Rex.

She gave him a look. "It's not alive, Colin. It can't eat anything."

"Well, no, ordinarily they don't. But there was a reason they were so cheap." He reached for the books, which did have pages that look like they'd been chewed. Colin must have spent ages ripping them up. "Look." He opened the top folder, flicked a switch on the underside of the dinosaur and put it down on top of the page. It whirred and gnashed its teeth. Then bobbed its head to make a mess of whatever it could get its teeth on. The accounts in this case.

"Perfect homework excuse," Colin said, beaming. "Yours for only £10."

Lynda stood up straight and folded her arms.

"All right, £11. And only because we're such good friends."

"Get the dinosaur away from the accounts." Lynda turned to go, but as she put her hand on the door handle, she looked back over her shoulder. "And I expect you to re-write the books and have them on my desk after school tomorrow."
