Obscure & British Commentfest 2016

Welcome to the Obscure & British comment fest IV! This is a comment fest for any small(ish) British fandom and open to all fanworks.

If you've ever loved any (non-large) British fandoms, find yourself too obscure for most fests, or you're busy wondering why there's still no Emma Peel in all this Avengers stuff, you're in the right place. Come on in and help yourself to a cup of tea and a crumpet. Also you should make prompts and fill them.

Rules & Guidelines
This commentfest works in the same way as most comment ficathons, although all kinds of fanworks are welcome. (Fanart, icons, fanmixes, vids, or whatever your creative mind can come up with or prompt for.) Just leave your prompt and/or browse through other people's prompts to see what you can fill.

1. Be polite - no bashing or shaming of anyone, or any prompts, characters, ships or fandoms! Thank you.

2. One prompt per post, please use format: Fandom(/Fandom), Character(s)/Pairing(s), prompt (i.e "Spooks, Tom/Ruth, apocalypse AU"). You may repost prompts from previous years (or even from elsewhere, as long as that's okay with the other fest/comm/whatever).

3. Post fills as replies (or links) to the comment containing the prompt. Please format the subject line as follows: Fandom - Character(s)/Pairing(s) - Ratings/Warnings (if included). There's a fills thread at the start of the post. Please also link your fill here, if you can. (I will also start up a masterlist post as soon as we have some fills.)

4. You may fill your own prompts if you wish, and multiple fills are more than welcome. (No prompt claiming needed.)

5. For crossovers any fandom is allowed as long as the first fandom qualifies. (If it's a cracky multi-fandom crossover prompt, that's fine, too, though try and make sure there are always equal or more eligible fandoms in proportion to those that are non-eligible.)

6. Any other questions - there's a questions thread at the start of the post if there's anything else you want to ask.

7. Prompt, fill, away!

Eligible Fandoms
Basically, any rare to smallish/medium British fandom, no matter how odd, old, obscure, non-existent, random or how shiny and new - anything that's not on the below list is fine. (Definitions of British are also fairly wide and hand-wavy - check on the questions thread if you're not sure.)

Non-eligible fandoms
ALL non-British fandoms are ineligible and the following fandoms are British but too large and therefore ineligible for this fest (although don't forget that you can prompt for any fandom as a crossover with an eligible fandom):

Chronicles of Narnia (all), Doctor Who (2005+), Downton Abbey, Harry Potter, The Hobbit (all), James Bond (Craig!Bond films), The Kingsman, Lord of the Rings (all), Merlin, The Musketeers (BBC), One Direction, Pride & Prejudice (all), Primeval, Robin Hood (BBC), Sherlock (BBC), Sherlock Holmes - Arthur Conan Doyle, The Silmarillion, Torchwood.

(RPF is welcome! Please use specific categories when prompting (e.g. history by century, and all actor/bandom RPF by individual series/film/band or whatever grouping seems most appropriate. In the spirit of the fest, please try and avoid RPF for non-eligible shows and super-popular actors like Tom Hiddleston or Benedict Cumberbatch.)

There's no closing date for prompts or fills - the fest will stay open until next year's post goes up. Once you've created a fill, you're welcome to crosspost it anywhere you like. (If you're posting to AO3, there's no collection for the fest, but there is an "Obscure & British Commentfest" tag you can use if you want.)

If you want to promote the fest, then thank you! Please do. You can find a selection of banners here, or feel free to make your own.

You can find last year's fest here. Also: O&B 2014 and O&B 2013. If you want to fill or repost a previous prompt, you may, although please also post to the fills thread on the current post.

ETA: Masterlist of Fills!

For those who don't have an LJ account, or prefer to remain anonymous, anon commenting is on!

Doctor Who, Ace McShane/Ray (from Delta and the Bannermen), travelling together

By Your Side, G, Doctor Who, Ace/Ray, travelling together

“Ray… RAY…”

Ace drags the girl back from the edge, noting that since they have been travelling together Ray takes more risks but also trusts her to keep her safe. She remembers a time when she was the one trusting someone else, now she is the one in charge.

“Don’t wander off…”

Even as she speaks the words she knows she’s talking the same words as The Professor… Doctor. Even now she can’t help but think of him as the Professor. He would be proud, she thinks, seeing her now. She has her own companion… Ray. Ray who he had told her about, Ray who she had sought out on leaving the Academy. Ray seems sweet enough, shy but fierce.

They walk away once the job is done, of course, leaving UNIT staring after them. The two of them look the same age, although Ace is now far, far older. Ray doesn’t seem to mind her age, the two of them spend long enough alone in their TARDIS, their home.

Ray never once asks for her own rooms, she chooses instead to spend the time on the TARDIS at Ace’s side. Ace isn’t sure what made her kiss Ray, but she’s glad she did. Travelling together, like this, works. She isn’t alone and Ray is happiest when loved, it works for them both.

Ooh, I'd like to have a go at this, but it's been years since I read the Bolitho books; any particular ship for Herrick? (Whom I adore, much like Bush.)

On Her Majesty's Secret Service (Lazenby!Bond), Bond/Tracy - 'We have all the time in the world' (Bonus for an AU where they manage to live for at least a while and have children)

On Her Majesty's Secret Service (Lazenby!Bond) - Bond/Tracy - 'We have all the time in the world' AU
After our chat, I had to give it a try!
“It’s Blofeld!” Bond exclaims, slamming the car door with feeling. He turns to look at Tracy, suddenly filled with an overwhelming feeling of dread. But no, her reflexes haven’t failed her. She’s thrown herself sideways across the car seat, sheltered from the bullets coming through the windscreen by the car itself. Her hair is coming out of her updo, and Bond can tell she is shaken but unhurt. “It’s all right, darling,” he soothes, lifting her gently upright and folding her against his chest. “They won’t try for another pass now that they’ve lost the element of surprise.”

“But they will be back,” Tracy asserts, head resting against his chest. “And they’ll try again.”

Bond can’t argue with that. “I’ll keep you safe,” he promises.

Tracy raises her head and meets his eyes. “You can’t. Not as long as he’s still alive.”

Bond’s arms tighten around her. “Then I’ll stop him. He’s a high-profile target. M will give me the resources.”

“Take me with you,” Tracy pleads, interrupting him before he can protest. “Please. Don’t say it’ll be too dangerous. They’ll come from me wherever I am. At least you’ll be there with me.”

Against his better judgment, Bond agrees.

It’s only when they’re out and in the thick of things that he remembers part of the reason he fell in love with her was her own love of danger and adrenaline, almost as fervent as his own. Out of necessity, he teaches her things, how to shoot and fight, how to pick locks and escape from desperate situations. Stripped of her fatalism, Tracy provs to be a quick study, and Bond can’t help feeling a touch of pride for his protégé. Still, Blofeld makes things difficult for them. Bond nearly loses Tracy more than once, and vice versa. But at the end of it all, Tracy cradles Bond’s battered body against her breast in the ruins of Blofeld’s lair, and whispers in his ear, “I’m pregnant, James.”

They have a boy first, then a girl. Tracy wants more, but Bond’s pessimism makes him think twice. He’s stepped back from the field in favour of a consultative role. He’s happy with Tracy and their brood, happier than he ever thought he could be. He hopes and prays, desperately, that the fates allow it to last. He’s made enemies. He knows it could easily be snatched away at any time. But right this moment, with Tracy lying in his arms, they have all the time in the world.

The Avengers, Steed & Peel, "Steed, we're needed"
May. 11th, 2016 02:36 pm (UTC)
The Avengers - Steed & Peel - "Steed, we're needed".
John Steed was convinced he had earned a day off. A quick call to the Ministry the night before revealed that there were no diabolical masterminds in the offing, no corpses found in inappropriate locations, and no strange phenomena stalking the countryside.

So the next morning, Steed treated himself to a leisurely lie-in. He savoured the morning sunlight filtering through the windows, watching it play over the wall as he ambled down the stairs in his dressing gown. He smiled when the sound of birdsong reached his ears as he stepped out to retrieve his milk. He dawdled over the morning paper while he waited for his egg to boil, sipping freshly-brewed coffee that filled the whole of Stable Mews with its rich aroma. By the time he popped his toast into the toaster, he was ensconced in a cocoon of calm, peace, and serenity. The hours stretched luxuriously before him, and his mind danced over the possibilities as he pondered how to best use his precious day of leisure.

The toast popped, and Steed deftly plucked both slices from the contraption and deposited them on his plate before they could singe his fingers. He was just about to reach for the jar of marmalade when he noticed a rather strange pattern burned into the bread. On closer inspection, he discovered that the left slice read, “Steed.” Frowning in bemusement, Steed turned to the other slice, only to discover it bore the words, “We’re Needed.”

Steed straightened up in surprise, then turned to his kitchen table, where Emma Peel was seated, calmly sipping coffee and reading his newspaper. A screwdriver sat incongruously at her elbow.

“Mrs. Peel!” Steed exclaimed. “I wasn’t expecting you this morning.”

“So I gathered.” Emma rose from the table, cup and saucer in hand. “I telephoned your office this morning. They told me you weren’t coming in.”

“I have the day off,” Steed informed her.

“Which is very convenient,” Emma countered, moving to join him at the kitchen counter. “I have something that needs looking into. It shouldn’t take more than a day to resolve with your help.”

“My dear Mrs. Peel, as delighted as I am to see you, I had plans.”

“Did you?” Emma cocked her head inquisitively. “I’m very sorry. What were they, beyond breakfast and rereading Tintin?”

Steed hesitated. “Well, nothing had been set in stone as of yet.”

Emma smiled knowingly. “Then may I suggest a visit to a few slightly suspicious organisations, followed by a drive in the country and lunch with a close friend.”

Steed smiled back, well-aware that he was being manipulated, and equally aware that he was quite pleased about it. “Do you know, I’d just about narrowed it down to that very idea.”

“How fortuitous for both of us,” Emma replied, with a twinkle in her eye. “I’ll wait while you change.” She picked up the “Steed” piece of toast and took a bite. “And enjoy your excellent taste in marmalade.”

“Only the best, Mrs. Peel,” Steed pronounced, heading for the stairs to his room. “Life is too short for anything else.”

When Anger Takes Control, G, Home Fires, Steph Farrow, Anger heals nothing... but sometimes we need
There’s no use getting angry… you tell yourself that a thousand times but you still get angry. It heals nothing, just makes the pain that much worse but still you need it… Stan is gone, your son has fallen silent and there’s no way back from this. Anger and strain take over and you snap, finally, yelling at the world.

It starts, as always, at home. Young Stan breaks something and you find yourself yelling.

Then, the workers in your fields. They do nothing wrong but you can’t help yelling again.

Finally you turn on your friends, yelling, cursing at them until finally the anger fades and you are left hoarse and crying, the strain of everything is too much. They don’t leave. Some fuss around you, others leave you to breathe, but they are still there.

You apologize… eventually, aware that they did nothing wrong but unable to hide your fear that things have changed. The workers in the field are accepting, not forgiving, but accepting. Stan, young Stan, looks fearful and you feel something break deep inside until he surprises you and hugs you tight.

Anger fades at last, until you can do nothing but shiver and cry alone, hiding your pain.

Would crossovers be acceptable? For instance, Alec Hardy of Broadchurch paired with Rose Tyler from Doctor Who?

ETA: Sorry, I'm tired, I see from the guidelines that it most likely is kosher.

The Persuaders!, Brett and Danny, friendship hurt/comfort with one of them (preferably Brett) being pulled by the other out of the water unconscious and nearly drowned on a case.

The Persuaders! - Brett and Danny - Danny rescues Brett from drowning
Brett sank, long limbs floating gently around him. The icy cold water sapped any strength that hadn’t dissipated with the blow to the head, and his grip on consciousness was tenuous at best. He knew, at some level, that he was dying, but the survival instinct was too weak to do much about it. He was so tired, all he wanted to do was sleep. Slowly, inevitably, his eyes slid closed.

Above him, the surface of the water was broken violently as a figure dove into the depths. It made straight for Brett with quick, strong strokes. A hand reached out and snagged Brett’s collar, pulling the man bodily upwards, before a strong scissor kick sent both men rocketing toward the surface.

Danny broke first, gasping and sputtering, then immediately set about pulling Brett’s head above water. He didn’t like the way the man’s body flopped limply as he paddled, denoting unconsciousness, or worse, death. Danny knew time was of the essence, and prayed that his efforts were not in vain as he swam desperately for the shore.

He dragged Brett onto the beach, grunting as the man’s dead weight, coupled with his sodden clothes, made the task an arduous one. “You’re heavy for a skinny guy,” Danny told his colleague. “Where do you keep it all, huh?” He lay Brett down on his back, put an ear to his chest, but he couldn’t hear a heartbeat for his own heart pounding in his ears. He leaned over and slapped Brett’s cheeks. “Come on, Brett, snap out of it.” He shook the man by his shoulders, getting more and more desperate. He kept talking to the man, even though he knew he probably couldn’t hear him. At some level, Danny knew it was his way of convincing himself Brett was still alive. Even if he wasn’t.

Brett was still unresponsive, and Danny was beginning to panic. “Don’t you dare, Your Lordship, you hear me? I ain’t dragging your body around the Riviera. Not today!” In a last fit of angry desperation, Danny drove his shoulder bodily into Brett’s abdomen, throwing all his weight into it. Brett’s body spasmed violently, arching off the ground, and then, much to Danny’s relief, he began to cough up water. Danny turned his friend onto his side to let the water drain out, relieved that each cough was gradually getting clearer. His eyes drifted to the Dino, parked nearby, driver’s door left hanging open in Danny’s haste to rescue his friend. There was a blanket in the back seat, Danny knew, and he conducted a quick internal debate about whether to stay by his friend’s side or risk leaving to get it for him. As Brett propped himself up on an elbow, and Danny caught sight of his blue lips, the decision was made for him. “Hang on, Brett. I’ll be right back.”

Brett was, unsuccessfully, trying to stand when Danny returned, but his legs clearly weren’t up to the task. Danny caught the man under the arm before he collapsed to the ground. “Take it easy, Your Lordship. You almost went to the big castle in the sky.”

“Nonsense,” Brett chattered, as Danny swirled the blanket around his shoulders. “The Sinclairs are of hardy stock.”

“Yeah, yeah, save me the history lesson.” Danny was trying to sound brusque, but he was clearly shaken.

Brett eyed his colleague up sceptically as Danny helped him to the car, taking in the other man’s sodden clothes. “Never mind me, Daniel. You’ll catch your death if you’re not careful.”

Danny waved him off impatiently. “Aw, I’m from New York.”

“That’s hardly a cure for hypothermia.”

“Well, you’re talking a lot, so you must be feeling better,” Danny observed, helping Brett into the car before dashing around to the driver’s side. He wouldn’t admit it, but he was looking forward to warming up almost as much as Brett. He cranked up the Dino’s heating as high as it would go.

“I wish I had some brandy,” Brett murmured, pulling the blanket tighter around his elegant shoulders. “That would ward off the cold.”

“I’ll buy you a whole cask, but you can’t die on me. American guys with dead English lords in the back seat get a rough ride from the cops.” Danny’s voice still had a tremor in it, undercutting the bravado.

Brett smiled in spite of his frigid bones. “I’ll do my best not to inconvenience you, Daniel.”

“You’re damn right you will,” Danny said with feeling. “Besides, you owe me money.”

Brett’s laugh warmed them both.
